Thanksgiving is always held on the fourth Thursday in November. It celebrates our strong American heritage of coming together with family and friends. A traditional Thanksgiving party involves turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, and pumpkin pie eaten at Grandma’s home. With the diversity of family types and sizes and how far apart some families can be, the traditional image may not fit your family. If so, it is time to figure out new family traditions for Thanksgiving.
The most important thing is deciding just who you would like to spend the holiday with. Make a list of the people who are important to you and send them an invitation to join with your for Thanksgiving. A traditional written invitation or one sent online via a service such as Evite will work.
A Thanksgiving party also does not have to be limited to the actual holiday. Some people receive a four-day weekend from work for Thanksgiving, which means that you could host a party on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday as well. Plus more people may be available if they have other plans on Thursday.
Next you will want to think about your menu. Perhaps you are not a fan of turkey or your family and friends are vegetarians. Consider having a showcase of all the different types of food that make up the American melting pot. Indian samosas, Italian lasagna, Russian borscht, and Chinese fried rice would make a beautiful and satisfying buffet. You could even ask your guests to bring a dish that celebrates their ethnic heritage.
Watching a football game is also a traditional component of Thanksgiving. Perhaps you are not interested in sitting around though. Split everyone up into teams and play a flag football game. Or prepare some Fun Games for Thanksgiving that everyone can participate in.
You definitely do not want to forget about Thanksgiving party supplies. Perhaps you do not have any fine china or enough plates for all of your guests. Consider purchasing Thanksgiving plates, cups, and napkins. They will help decorate your home and as an added bonus it will cut down on the number of dishes you will need to wash. After all you want to spend time with your guests and not get stuck in the kitchen.
Most of all remember that Thanksgiving is about spending time with those you care about and giving Thanks for all that you have. Enjoy the holiday and your Thanksgiving party.
