Overcoming Party Planning Differences

Tug of WarYour child’s birthday is coming up and it is time to start planning. It is always a good idea to give yourself 4-8 weeks to plan the perfect party. That will give you time to research ideas, order party supplies, plan the menu, get invitations in the mail, and come up with party activities for your guest. What do you do if your idea for your child’s party and their idea are different though?

You may want to have a Dainty Tea Party and your child wants a Totally Gross birthday. Two completely different ideas that it may be hard to find middle ground for. It is always possible to compromise though. It is a good idea to sit down with your child and discuss your ideas with each other. Go to neutral ground for your planning session. Pick a local coffee shop, order some fancy drinks and get to work. Your child will love the novelty of it and having some one on one time with you as well.

Find out who your child would like to invited to their party and what kind of activities they would like to do. You may find out that a cute tea party is not quite their idea of fun or that they don’t think their friends would enjoy that kind of party. Discuss if they have any other alternative ideas.

You should also let them know what kind of party you were hoping to host for their special day. It is okay to have objections to the type of party that they want. The key here is to find a party that you can both agree on.

Find your common ground and make plans for the things you do agree on. It may be a party game that you both love. Once you agree on one thing, the others will follow. Remind each other that a birthday party is about fun and celebration. The planning should be fun as well.

If your ideas are still as divergent as a tea party and a totally gross party, even there you can find compromise. Host a totally gross tea party! Brainstorm on ways the items on a tea party menu can become a gross one. Lady finger sandwiches can be finger sandwiches, etc. You and your child will have a great time working together to plan the perfect birthday party. The key is definitely to work together.
