Memorial Day is a federal holiday that was first celebrated after the Civil War. It was originally called Decoration Day. It was meant to be a time to decorate the graves of soldiers who died. Today it is celebrated on the last Monday in May and is generally considered the official beginning of summer. Memorial Day this year is Monday May 25th. Gather your family and friends for a Memorial Day Party.
Our community offers a Memorial Day parade filled with veterans, floats, and marching bands. It always warms the heart to see the standing ovation and applause that the veterans get as they go by. Check your local community’s website or newspaper to see if there is a parade in your area. Or check an online Memorial Day Parade Directory. A parade can be a great kickoff to an outdoor barbecue.
After the parade invite everyone to gather at your home and fire up the barbecue. For an easy menu invite your guests to bring their favorite dish to pass and you can provide the main course. Plan on barbecuing crowd favorites such as hamburger and hot dogs. Make sure you have an option for any vegetarian guests as well. Many grocery stores offer vegetarian burgers in their freezer section.
If your yard offers space for it, set up some outdoor games. A volleyball net always provides fun for a crowd. Check out these outdoor game ideas for inspiration as well. If you are going to have younger guests and the weather will be warm, set up a splash pool for them to play in.
Your day is sure to be special with these great Memorial Day Party ideas. Plan now, as it is only a few weeks away.
