Most birthday parties are held at home or at a location near home. If you are looking for a unique birthday party idea, why not consider a destination birthday party. While this is not typically a party that you would invite a large number of guests to, going somewhere special with just your immediate family can be a very special celebration.
This type of birthday party can be as short as an overnight visit to a nearby hotel (perhaps one with an indoor waterpark) or a weeklong visit to someplace further away. Think about what the birthday kid would really enjoy the most when making your plans.
For instance the little elf really would like an American Girl doll for her birthday. Rather than just ordering one out of the catalog, it would be so much more fun to travel to a store to pick one out in person. So there is much research about Chicago hotels and travel plans going on here.
There are a number of ways to mark a birthday while on trip and here are some essential things to bring and plan for:
- Party supplies. If you are hitting the road for a birthday, you definitely want to bring the party with you. A great way to do so is to bring themed party supplies along for the trip. For the little elf some American Girl party supplies will be in the suitcase for a special celebration in our hotel room.
- Birthday cake. A birthday is just not the same without a cake with candles to sing Happy Birthday around. Research some local bakeries in the area before you leave and pre-order a cake. Find out if they will deliver or if you will have to pickup. If so then get directions from your hotel to the bakery. Don’t forget the candles!
- Presents! While the trip itself is a great present, it is also fun to have something to unwrap on your birthday. Pack some small gifts to open when you celebrate.
- Special Dinner. If you are staying in a hotel, eating out for most meals is probably a necessity. Find out before hand if there are any special restaurants in the area to have the birthday dinner at. Maybe your child has a favorite restaurant that they love to go to and finding one at your destination would be a special treat. See if the restaurant does anything special for birthdays. They may serenade with a birthday song or offer a free dessert.
