Hosting a Circus Clown Birthday Party

Most children love the circus and clowns.  Hosting a fun, clowning around birthday party can be simple and easy.  Set the mood with the invitations.  Inflate balloons, write the party details on them, deflate, place in an envelope and mail.  Use cardboard popcorn boxes as the invitation.  For a personal touch, fill them with popcorn and hand deliver them.

Hang red and white crepe paper streamers from a central point in the ceiling to make the Big Top of the circus tent.  Place blown up balloons everywhere.  Primary colors, red, blue, yellow and green, will work if you can not find themed party ware.  Play circus music, traditionally the calliope, during the party.

Make a clown collar for each child out of felt.  Have a table where they can personalize with pompoms and jingle bells.  Create a clown hat out of felt or paperboard by wrapping it into a cone.  Let the kids decorate with crayons, pompoms or markers.

Hire a clown to entertain the guests.  Make sure they can create balloon animals and that there is time for every guest to get one.  Alternately let your guests try their hand at creating balloon animals.  They may need help blowing up the balloons though.  Enlist an adult to paint faces.  Don’t forget to pass out red foam clown noses.  Rent a moonwalk if you have the space for one.  A clown party is also a great time for a piñata.

Party games that will fit a circus clown party are pin the nose on the clown, water balloon toss, sponge relay race – separate children into two teams, place a water filled bucket at one end and an empty bucket with a fill line at the other.  Give each team a sponge and the first team to fill the empty bucket to the line with the sponge wins.

Serve food that you find at a circus, such as hot dogs, popcorn, peanuts and snow cones.  Call a local party rental and rent a cotton candy machine.  Make a clown shaped cake by using two round cakes.  Use one round cake for the clown’s head and cut the other into a cone shape for the hat.  Fit them together and frost.

These ideas should get you well on your way to a having a great circus clown party.  You may even want to clown around yourself.  Just don’t run away with the circus.
