Host an Oktoberfest Party for Kids

by Partyelf on August 23, 2010

Oktoberfest PartyFall is a beautiful time of year. The leaves on the trees are starting to change color, sweet corn is plentiful at farmer’s market, and the days are starting to turn cooler. It is also the perfect time host an Oktoberfest Party for kids.

Oktoberfest is traditionally celebrated in Munich, Germany at the end of September and the beginning of October. It is marked with mugs of beer, bratwurst and pretzels. Not exactly the menu that you will want to serve to children, but it is easily modified. You can serve root beer and hotdogs for your young guests. Pretzels should definitely stay on the menu. You can try your hand at making your own or try to find some soft pretzels in the freezer section of your supermarket. Apple cider and donuts will also be a welcome addition to the menu.

Make the party about celebrating the fall and harvest. Have a small pumpkin for each party guest and set up a decorating station. Have paint, paint brushes, stickers, glue, and glitter available. Allow them free reign in decorating their pumpkins. Tell everyone to bring an art smock or have some big shirts available that you don’t mind getting dirty.

Get a face painting kit and set up a face painting station. Even if you do not have much of an artistic ability it is pretty easy to do. Klutz offers a great book on how to paint faces.

Decorate with pumpkins, dried corn stalks, hay bales, and the harvest colors of orange, brown, and gold. Create a scarecrow with some old clothes and hay. Pin the clothes together and stuff with the hay. Place a pumpkin on top for the head and top with a hat.

Play traditional German music for your guests. Encourage them to dance. Learn some traditional German folkdance steps to teach your party guests. People will be more likely to dance if the moves are easy to follow and there is someone showing them what to do.

Have a great Oktoberfest Party! Check out these fun items perfect for your party:
